Mit diesem simplen Trick Angriffe in Freunde verwandeln

Angriffe verwandeln

Leo[:en]Maybe you know that situation: You happen to let know that you live in an open relationship and suddenly everyone falls silent. Suddenly everyone is an expert in relationships and thinks he has to tell you his opinion. And not only that, they also feel entitled to attack you about how you personally live your relationships.

“You’ve just never really been in love.” And “If you’re older you’ll see how foolish you are.” are even ones of the more friendly comments.

Sometimes it can of course be fun to dispute. But sometimes you just want to be let alone and not attacked all the time. But how can you do that? I explain it to you in this article.

About normativity

The first question ones can ask is: How does it always come so far? Why is anyone at all interested how you personally live your relationsip? And why do people feel entitled to lecture you?

The answer is: Normativity. Everything that is “normal” is normative. Everything that’s not normal is not normative. This Norm can in principle be anything. If you get asked obnoxious questions about your love live, or in general people start to discus with you just because you told them about you, you are in a place where monogamy is normative. To simplify we’ll call this “Mono-Normativity”.

It also can be, that you are at a meet-up where monogamous people happen to be the minority. You won’t have these problems there. In a similar way you won’t be confronted with “Hetero-normativity”, the norm of heterosexuality at a LGBTQ Meet-Up.

But lets just assume you are in a mono-normative environment. You have intentional or accidently told them, you don’t live monogamous or don’t like monogamy for yourself. Or you have in any other way made clear, that you are not mono-normative.

The discussion that follows unfolds fast.

Typical discussion patterns

First you will be asked, what exactly you mean by whatever you just said. There is a need to specify, if what you just said maybe was just meant as a joke. This specifying often is only superficial. In this pattern of communication it’s not really about understanding what you think or how you live. In general it’s about confirming ones own prejudice. Furthermore it’s about defending the norm as itself. The discussion is “won” if at the end of the talk you’re framed as a strange but likeable freak and also if its 110 % clear, that non-monogamous lifestyle only works in really rare exceptional cases.

For you on the other hand, there is not really a “winning” option. You don’t even realize in the first place that you started a fight by simply existing.

A lot of frustration can result out of these situations and often you just don’t want to bear this stuff over and over again.

But what if there would be a method, with that you can swiftly and efficiently end these talks? And not only end, but end in a way, that result in more comprehension and a honestly risen interest in your lifestyle? Because I for myself don’t really feel uncomfortable about honest open questions – it’s the accusation that bothers.

The trick: metamorphose the attacks.

The skill how to metamorphose attackers to sensible interested people works in three steps.

First step: revelation.

First you tell them, that you have a different opinion regarding monogamy than most people. Or that you yourself live in a non-monogamous relationship. At this point nothing is really different from before.

Furthermore you distinguish if you like the reaction. If your personal gut tells you, that the respect is missing, you proceed to the next step. If not, everything is allright, no reason for tricks. Remember, that not all people are prejudiced and sometimes people who are honestly interested are just a little clumsy in the way they ask.

If you have recognized that you miss respect in this specific situation, or you just feel uneasy or annoyed, you proceed to the next step.

Second step: Fokus.

You concentrate all your argumentation on a single point. You only want the acknowledgment, that your way of living works well for yourself and makes you and only you happy. You don’t get tired of repeating that this only counts for you. But you insist on not being doubted in your happiness and you do this with significant pressure if needed. If your counterpart gets all cheeky and insists on the claim you can’t possibly be happy, you just turn the tables on him or her.

You have to options. You can claim with exactly the same arguments, that his relationship style – namely the standard-monogamy – makes people in general deeply unhappy. Or you can in exactly the same way and the same wording claim that especially HIS way of living will never make him happy. If your counterpart then trys to justify, you  can claim that with these hardened fronts there can and will be no equal exchange.

Here are some examples for mirroring typical claims:

  • “I just don’t understand how one can have more than one partner? That can’t be true love.” Will be answered with: “I don’t understand how one can have only one partner and enchain them this much. That can’t be true love.”
  • “Its just not natural.” Will be answerd with: “Monogamy is just not natural.”
  • “So you don’t really have a partner.” Will be answered with: “Having just one partner means staying together just because you have no options. That’s not really having a partner.”
  • “It’s just fucking around.” Will be answered with: “It’s just cowardice.”

I think you get the idea. ;)

At this point you will maybe be confronted with another argument. The claim, that open relationship in general are impossible. Don’t get upset about this. It doesn’t matter if you are yourself in a situation where you can falsify this claim or single right now: Don’t let this argument stand. Tell them about other people who live open relationships. Explain that there are a lot of people who in a lot of different ways live this lifestyle or for example visit swinger-clubs.

If you know nobody, you can refer to my site or other people you know about from reports. The claim, that open relationships are impossible is proven wrong by one sole counter-example.

Third step: The genius knack about the whole thing.

Instead of continuing to furiously stand your ground, you suddenly shut down all resistance.

If your counterpart states that this would never work for himself you agree. “Yeah, I really think too this concept might not be right for you.”

If the person claims that it would be to exhausting for him you agree. “Yeah, sometimes it really can be exhausting.”

If the other one claims, he or she would simply die of jealousy you reinforce. “Jealousy really is a problem and I can imagine that it would be impossible for you to solve.”

Maybe you think that’s counter-intuitive. But this technique is incredibly powerful. You are creating a vacuum and this vacuum withdraws all air to fire up further prejudice. Everything your counterpart can say at this point are only “I-statements” and have nothing at all to do with yourself or open relationships in general.

But the other one in fact, wants to keep talking! They are curious! But their accusing and bossy attitude won’t work anymore without any resistance. Your counterpart will therefore go to the last resort he has to keep the conversation going. He will start asking honest open questions.

He will be interested in what he thought was impossible. He will be put in a position, at which he wants something from you. You don’t have to defend anything anymore, because he wants information and advice. And because these questions will be honest question, they will be asked at the specific points where he himself has the greatest doubts about monogamy.

Why does this work though?

Trough insisting on accepting reality of working open relationships, you’ve achieved a break of taboo. And the other one didn’t even knew he had this taboo: The idea, that monogamy is the only style of relationship that can work out.

If this taboo is broken, then for every person who at least sometimes doubts monogamy will become overwhelming fortified. And its only the people with doubt who will attack you aggressively. It may be, that your counterpart will not immediately start asking you questions. But he will vry likely at some point in the future. If he has doubts, and doesn’t know who to turn them to, you will be the one he’ll remember.

You are now the contact person and main information source for every question regarding this topic. And they will be thankful for every piece of information you got. With this foundation you can start talking much  more openly and honest about this this topic. You can help them and start exchanging opinions and information in a transparent an pleasant way.

And hey, maybe you can recoomend my site…

Just try the whole thing the next time someone attacks you for your opinion about open relationships. You will be surprised how much less anger and fruitless discussion you’ll have this way.

I’ll also look forward to hear about your experience with this method and also if you have something to add or improve. I’m excited to hear from you!

Best regards,

Leo

    Hallo Leo,
    stark,
    aller herzlichsten Dank,
